Your phone, laptop, smart TV, or tablet connects to your home Wi-Fi or mobile network, which in turn connects to your internet service provider (ISP). From there, your request can travel across many different networks before reaching its destination.
The internet doesn’t have one central computer controlling everything. Instead, countless independent networks cooperate using shared technical standards that allow devices around the world to communicate.
What happens when you visit a website?
Imagine you type a website address into your browser.
The first thing your device does is figure out where that website is located.
Although humans use names like example.com, computers communicate using numerical IP addresses, which function much like street addresses on the internet.
A system called the Domain Name System (DNS) translates the website’s name into its corresponding IP address.
Once your device knows where the website is located, it sends a request across the internet asking for the site’s files.
The web server hosting the website responds by sending back everything your browser needs, including text, images, videos, and design elements.
Your browser then assembles those files and displays the finished webpage on your screen—usually in just a few seconds.
Data travels in small packets
One of the internet’s most impressive features is how it moves information.
Instead of sending an entire file at once, the internet breaks data into many small pieces called packets.
Each packet contains part of the information along with instructions about where it came from and where it needs to go.
These packets don’t necessarily follow the same route across the internet. They may travel through different networks depending on traffic conditions, available connections, or temporary outages.
When they reach your device, they’re automatically reassembled into the original message, image, video, or webpage.

Many people assume the internet primarily relies on satellites.

Satellites do play an important role in providing internet access to remote areas and supporting certain communication services, but most global internet traffic moves through these high-capacity cable networks because they’re faster and can carry much more data.
Without this global web of undersea cables, today’s internet wouldn’t function as we know it.
How Wi-Fi fits into the picture
Wi-Fi often gets confused with the internet, but they aren’t the same thing.
Wi-Fi is simply a way for your devices to connect wirelessly to your local router.
The router then connects to your internet service provider, giving your devices access to the wider internet.
If your internet connection goes down, your Wi-Fi network may still exist—you’ll simply be unable to reach websites or online services.
In other words, Wi-Fi is one method of accessing the internet, not the internet itself.
Why websites load so quickly
Considering how much information moves across the internet, it’s remarkable that websites often load in just a few seconds.
Several technologies help make this possible.
Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) store copies of popular websites and files in servers located around the world. Instead of downloading data from one distant location, your browser can often retrieve it from a nearby server.
Browsers also store certain files temporarily in a cache, allowing frequently visited websites to load more quickly.
Meanwhile, modern internet infrastructure uses incredibly fast fiber-optic connections capable of transmitting enormous amounts of data almost instantly.
Together, these technologies create the fast, responsive online experience most people expect today.
